Hi Aurora,
Female Genital Cutting (FGC) is recognized as a violation of human rights of women and girls. Yet, 140 million girls and women worldwide are currently living with the repercussions of FGC. And until the myths surrounding FGC are addressed the cutting practice will continue.
The largest resistance to end FGC comes from fathers and mothers who believe that their daughter will be unmarriageable unless they are circumcised. So, now, some FGC awareness campaigns are targeting men in order to transform societal perceptions of FGC. They are working to combat the widespread myth that the practice is mandated by Islamic teachings.
Circumcision does not enhance or add to a girl's value as a wife and a mother. In fact, it can harm a woman̢۪s reproductive organs, making childbirth difficult or even impossible.
Sadly, the cultural cutting practice is still widely accepted as a part of life, especially in rural areas of Africa, India, and the Middle East. But even here in the U.S., you can help to dismantle this awful myth. Tell Presidential-elect Obama to defend human rights and stop Female Genital Cutting. »
