A VelvetRevolution.us Campaign

Stop Domestic Terror

Recently, there has been an explosion in threats and acts of domestic terrorism. The majority of these can be traced to groups and individuals who do not accept the results of our recent election or the laws enacted or proposed by those who have been elected. They seek to undermine the democratic process through threats, intimidation, and even outright murder. They can't accept the legitimacy of the President, or a woman's legal right to make choices about her own medical care, or an immigrant's right to be treated humanely under the law, so they carry out acts that are antithetical to American democracy, American values, and both civil and human rights.

The fringe elements that makes up those who commit these acts of terror, are frequently exploited by a continuous wave of rightwing media advocating violence, either directly or indirectly, by commentators amplifying the talking points of extremist religious leaders and extremist political leaders. The fringe is incited on our public airwaves, and urged to take matters into their own hands, with the underlying belief that the Bible and/or U.S. Constitution justify using "whatever means" are necessary to oppose what they believe to be immoral laws.

We are taking a stand against this dangerous trend towards the incitement of lawlessness and violence. We strongly believe in the First Amendment right of free expression and discourse, even when that expression is abhorrent or not in line with our own beliefs. However, the First Amendment does not protect debate where one side includes the threat or act of violence.

We have written a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder outlining our concerns and requesting that he act quickly to address this wave of domestic terrorism. A copy of the letter is here with the exhibits A-F here:

Exhibit A-Pet for Inquiry (FCC Letter)
Exhibit B-Letter to NTIA (NTIA Letter)
Exhibit C-Armed Revolution (Armed Revolution Website)
Exhibit D-Tiller Report (Op Rescue Tiller Baby Killer)
Exhibit E-talk radio(Structural Imbalance of Talk Radio)
Exhibit F-Frank Schaeffer letter (Schaeffer Letter to Holder)

Specifically, we are taking the following steps to address this dangerous trend toward extremism.

  1. Urge the Department of Justice to:

    • study this trend toward the encouragement of violent lawlessness and initiate action to counter it,

    • investigate and prosecute those who are committing and inciting others to commit acts of violence,

    • review whether any media groups are violating antitrust laws by monopolizing media or media markets, or failing in their obligation to meet the "public interest" of their FCC broadcast licenses.

    • support an update and study by the FCC and NTIA of the 1993 report, "The Role of Telecommunications in Hate Crimes."

    • Conduct an investigation into the rise of extremism and violence and the role of the media in this phenomenon

  2. Urge Congress to hold hearings on the responsibility of the licensed broadcast media to conduct itself in the public interest

  3. Support legislation to require diversity in media ownership, encourage broader minority ownership of FCC licensed media outlets, and that otherwise reverses the dangerous trend of media monopolies allowed following the passage of Bill Clinton's Telecommunications Act of 1996.

  4. We are calling on the CEOs and Boards of media organizations to denounce and remove hosts, commentators and others who use the media to incite violence and spread lies that lead others to violence.

  5. We are calling on advertisers to cancel all ads on any media that uses the airwaves to spread a message of hate, intolerance, racism, lies and violence.

  6. We are calling on religious leaders to denounce all forms of intimidation and violence, and to cooperate with the Department of Justice by reporting information about those who intend to commit violence.

  7. We are working with leaders in the religious community who have taken a stand against violence, such as Frank Schaeffer, who was one of the architects of the Religious Right. Mr. Schaeffer, who will be promoting this campaign, has written a letter to Eric Holder offering his cooperation and insight into this trend toward violence and offering suggestions on how to address it.

  8. We are supporting the efforts of other organizations that are addressing various aspects of this campaign, such as www.colorofchange.org, www.mediamatters.org, www.shockjock.org, www.rightwingwatch.org, www.splcenter.org, www.nhmc.org., suewilsonreports.com, www.alternet.org, www.freepress.net, www.thinkprogress.org, www.americanprogress.org, www.latinosagansthatespeech.org, www.adl.org, hladc-sf.blogspot.com.

Rob and Arnie: Tell me what you presume the most about yourself...

and I will tell you of what you lack the most.

In addition, tell me what you fear the most, it tells what's on your heart.

Dawn, you gave me joy when I heard you talk about Transgender, I also like that you think 'the world is beautiful' and that 'life can be wonderful', the latter is true until morons take it upon themselves to make it difficult for others, I can't tell if it is good or bad that you don't have to look far to find them, you work with two prime examples.

I heard what they said on May 28 about transgender and I heard how they try to weasel out hiding behind Free Speech, I agree that it is a right they have, that they use that right to air their insecurities and low self-esteem by making fun of others or themselves, it is their choice, to which they have a right to do as well.

But your rights stop when mine start, so, all we needed was for our parents tell us we are not girls and to take us to do 'boy things', you are so sure about this, absolutely sure, yeah, right - you are so wrong and I might add, dense - transgender who get support from their parents, friends, society, are the exception, not the rule.

We were told all that you suggest as 'cure', many of us were verbally abused, beaten, kicked out of our homes, it doesn't work.

You are making more difficult a difficult situation, for what?

There is so much more that I could say, specially about Ron, but I won't waste my time by going into what Ron is, he called me a freak, a weirdo, it is pure projection and for his sake I hope he knows it too, he is a sick little puppy.

Anyway, I got recordings of the original broadcast and of the subsequent broadcasts of segments they did on the subject, this post is to make them available to whomever wants to hear them, a little bit about how this is not the first time they show how warped their minds are and an update on how some of their sponsors are reacting.

KRXQ Sacramento Radio Hosts Have History of Obscenity Involving Children: FCC Report

In the wake of the media and Internet firestorm which followed a call to action by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and coverage in The Huffington Post, which broke this story well before most major media outlets, several national advertisers have pulled their accounts from Rob, Arnie & Dawn in the Morning on KRXQ 98.55 in Sacramento.

For its part, the station has taken the broadcast down off the station's public website and removed its list of advertisers and sponsors.

During the May 28th broadcast, two of the show's three hosts, Rob Williams and Arnie States, spent approximately thirty minutes of the segment berating transgender children as "idiots," "freaks," and "freaks of nature," who were "just out for attention." They compared the children to "fat bastard kids on Maury" who just needed to be put in their places with verbal abuse and even physical punishment if necessary. States said that if he had a male child who put on a pair of high heels, he would discipline him by striking the little boy with his own shoe.

For more updates on this issue, GLAAD is staying on top of it.

Pam at Pam's House Blend has been blogging about it too.

June 2, 2009— In a lengthy May 28 tirade on the Rob, Arnie & Dawn in the Morning radio show heard in Sacramento, California on KRXQ 98.5 FM and Reno, Nevada on KDOT 104.5 FM, hosts Rob Williams and Arnie States verbally attacked transgender children. While discussing a recent story about a transgender child in Omaha, Nebraska and her parents’ decision to support her transition, the two hosts spent more than 30 minutes explicitly promoting child abuse of and making cruel, dehumanizing and defamatory comments toward transgender children.

You can listen to the entire segment beginning at 4:48 by

Among the comments made by the hosts:

ROB WILLIAMS [11:12]: This is a weird person who is demanding attention. And when it’s a child, all it takes is a hug, maybe some tough love or anything in between. When your little boy said, ‘Mommy, I want to walk around in a dress.’ You tell them no cause that’s not what boys do. But that’s not what we’re doing in this culture.

ARNIE STATES [13:27]: If my son, God forbid, if my son put on a pair of high heels, I would probably hit him with one of my shoes. I would throw a shoe at him. Because you know what? Boys don’t wear high heels. And in my house, they definitely don’t wear high heels.

ROB WILLIAMS [17:45]: Dawn, they are freaks. They are abnormal. Not because they’re girls trapped in boys bodies but because they have a mental disorder that needs to be somehow gotten out of them. That’s where therapy could help them.

ROB WILLIAMS [18:15]: Or because they were molested. You know a lot of times these transgenders were molested. And you need to work with them on that. The point is you don’t allow the behavior. You cure the cause!

ARNIE STATES [21:30]: You got a boy saying, ‘I wanna wear dresses.’ I’m going to look at him and go, ‘You know what? You’re a little idiot! You little dumbass! Look, you are a boy! Boys don’t wear dresses.’

ARNIE STATES [29:22]: You know, my favorite part about hearing these stories about the kids in high school, who the entire high school caters around, lets the boy wear the dress. I look forward to when they go out into society and society beats them down. And they end up in therapy.

To her credit, co-host Dawn Rossi stood up to Williams and States during the segment.

Despite her apparent lack of familiarity with transgender issues, Rossi repeatedly defended transgender people and made an on-air apology for her colleagues’ defamatory remarks.

TAKE ACTION NOW!
Please contact KRXQ management in Sacramento, California, where the show is produced and demand that radio show hosts Rob Williams and Arnie States publicly apologize. Micahel Savage calls transgendered trolley driver "sick degenerate," "insane,"

SOURCE:
A Truly Elegant Mess

And Video From: Media Matters for America

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

MSM, Why Do You Wish Me Pain?

Okay, so there was this trolley crash in Boston, about 50 people were injured. I only noticed it because the stated reason for the crash was that the trolley operator was texting his girlfriend while driving. Your standard tale of human stupidity in a Western, industrialized nation, yes? Certainly sounds like it to me.

Then I checked my Google Alerts.

Savage calls transgendered trolley driver "sick degenerate," "insane," says docs performing sex reassignment surgery "should be arrested" May 13, 2009 1:04 pm ET
From: Media Matters for America

Apparently, the driver in question identifies himself as transgendered, and this is somehow considered relevant news. In an article that is almost completely about the accident, that talks extensively about the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's policies and actions regarding their employees behavior, it is somehow relevant to title the article: "Texting Trolley Driver Is Transgendered Male" and make frequent references to Mr. Quinn being hired because of his minority status.

Okay, this has gone from a story about how sad our culture is with being so interconnected that someone can't be away from their toys long enough to not crash a trolley, to something that leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I would give ABC News credit for proper pronouns and gendering (with the exception of including Mr. Quinn's birth name which is fucking skeezy) if this entire article didn't have that subtext of "See what happens when we hire those minorities? Affirmative action is bad, mm'kay?" and if that subtext wasn't so goddamn subtle. Its the kind of thing that someone who is not the most progressive, or who doesn't think to look for things like this, will see, will skim over and will assimilate without even realizing it.

If someone gets a job they are not qualified for because whoever hired them was afraid of being "offensive" then blame the person who hired them, but this subtle "See what happens when we try to level the playing field? See? White, het, cis doods really are just better at everything!" shit is disgusting.

Note to media: Someone's gender identity, no matter how open with it they are, is COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY IRRELEVANT to whether they are going to do stupid shit and there is no reason to bring it up except to put this person and vicariously the community they are part of, on display for those who have access to privileges that people like Mr. Quinn are denied.

More plainly, y'all are being privileges assholes. Fucking stop it.

Savage on SF Police Dept. transgender sensitivity training: "brainwash[ing]" by a "freak," "sort of like toilet training for adults"

SOURCE:

MEDIA MATTERS FOR AMERICA
Thu, Jan 8, 2009 5:22pm ET

Trouble viewing clip? Download: QuickTime

Radio host Michael Savage continued his attacks on the transgender community during the January 7 broadcast of The Savage Nation, declaring that a sensitivity training program for San Francisco police detectives on transgender issues is "sort of like toilet training for adults" and describing the program as a "class ... to teach normal men how to have sensitivity to a psychopathic sex-change operative who should be in a mental hospital." Savage also published a "memorandum" about the sensitivity training program -- which he claimed was "sent to me anonymously by ... someone in the [San Francisco] police department" -- on his website under the headline: "Exclusive: SFPD forcing detectives to undergo brainwashing by transgendered dick."

On The Savage Nation, Savage added:

The San Francisco Police Department is forcing detectives to undergo brainwashing by a transgendered detective.

[...]

Now, we have a homicide epidemic in San Francisco; we have a gang problem in San Francisco; we have a bum problem in San Francisco; we have a mayor problem in San Francisco; we have a supervisor problem in San Francisco. It's a city out of control. We have government anarchy, and these psychotic SOBs are wasting detectives' time in sensitivity training for a transgendered lieutenant.

Later, regarding his own experience with diversity training, Savage also stated:

If I were the inspectors being forced to do this, I would, as a group -- I would, as a group, refuse to go. I would not let myself be brainwashed by this freak. Now, I did this. When I worked at a local radio station, they forced the entire staff to take diversity training. I was the only one who challenged the freaks giving the diversity training. I fought them every step of the way. All the other big mouths, including ex-Marines and ex-this and ex-that, sat there quietly and said nothing. And I challenged them every step of the way and they never had diversity training again in that radio station. Never. And the police should do the same thing. The military should do this. It's enough with the freaks ruling these places.

As Media Matters for America has documented, Savage previously described a transgender murder victim as a "psychopath" and a "freak" who "should have been in a back ward in a straitjacket for years, howling on major medication." Savage also blamed sexual reassignment surgery for the Columbine massacre, stating that "the capital of [sexual reassignment surgery] is somewhere in Colorado, near Columbine. ...You wonder why the kids shoot each other there with black raincoats."

From the January 7 broadcast of Talk Radio Network's The Savage Nation:

SAVAGE: The San Francisco Police Department is forcing detectives to undergo brainwashing by a transgendered detective. Now, this transgendered detective did not pass the lieutenants' exam, she failed it. He failed it -- it's a she-to-he detective -- failed the lieutenants' exam, was promoted anyway, and now they're forcing the other detectives to pay attention to sensitivity issues of transgendered detectives. If it gets any sicker than this, I'd like to know where.

This has ramifications for the rest of the nation, because this is total insanity. And you can see the memorandum sent to me anonymously by the -- someone in the police department, who I will not disclose, and it says: "Transgendered training for the investigations bureau. Lieutenant Stephen Thorne" -- that's a female-to-male detective -- "is facilitating transgendered community awareness training. Below are the dates, times, and locations of the training offered." Offered -- of course they have to go. "Please direct your lieutenants to have all members pick a date for training." Training: sort of like toilet training for adults, only, in this case, it's very serious business.

"The signup lists are due in Room 400 by Monday, January 5, 2009, and we are to note that space is limited to 35 members per class." It's a class now to teach normal men how to have sensitivity to a psychopathic sex-change operative who should be in a mental hospital.

[...]

SAVAGE: Now, I've got to tell you something. And I challenged them every step of the way, and they never had diversity training again in that radio station. Never. And the police should do the same thing. The military should do this. It's enough with the freaks ruling these places.

[...]

SAVAGE: Question number two -- which goes back to the first story: Should the police detectives in San Francisco refuse to accommodate this transgendered freak and the psychopath running the city, "Any-twosome" Newsom, and simply go on strike and not submit themselves to transgender training?

[...]

SAVAGE: Well, I think we can move on. I'm talking about the enforced transgendered training in the San Francisco police department. Apparently, no cops in San Francisco have the guts to call this show, which explains to you why we have a homicide epidemic in San Francisco and why they're willing to bend down and roll over for a transgendered freak show, imposed upon them by the sickest city administration in the history of this great city, and so I don't care about the topic. If you're willing to be -- shall I say, let me use the right word here since it's a family show -- turned into a capon by this transgendered administration, go ahead. What do I care? I did your work for you. I tried to show America how you and the SFPD are being abused by the so-called liberals, and you don't want to call this show on it? That's your problem, deal with it. Then roll over for a transgendered freak. I don't care. I don't care about Israel. I don't care about the police. I don't care about the Republicans. I really don't care about anything right now. Why should I care? So let's talk about something else.

[...]

CALLER: I can't believe what I just heard. Why don't the lieutenants association go on strike? I can't believe that.

SAVAGE: I just told you: because the SFPD has been caponized. They have fundamentally been turned into geldings. The city administration is such a terrorist organization in favor of homosexuals, transgender rights, whatever, that the police themselves are terrified to stand up and speak out against this outrage, this brainwashing.

[...]

SAVAGE: In San Francisco, which is suffering a drug epidemic, a gang epidemic, a homicide epidemic, a bum epidemic, they're forcing detectives in the San Francisco police department to be diversity-trained by a transgendered freak show, someone who failed the lieutenants' exam, according to what I am told, but was pushed forward in the dark of night by "Any-twosome" Newsom and his cronies, pushed over others who qualified on the exam, and made into a lieutenant, and now this transgendered freak is going to have the pleasure of telling normal detectives how biased they are, how illiberal they are, how mean they are, how cruel they are for not being more sensitive to transgendered individuals. Isn't America great? Isn't San Francisco great that they can devote so much time to such an important topic?

An LGBT movement takes shape

SOURCE:

READER'S VIEW

AS ATTACKS on the Seattle lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community have escalated, young activists have begun making news with their energy and fresh ideas.

With a renewed sense of outrage and urgency, the possibility exists for the creation of a sizable grassroots organization of activists organizing around a range of issues affecting the LGBT community. Large questions remain, however, about the type of struggle that will most effectively combat homophobia in the wake of the passage of Proposition 8, California's anti-same sex marriage law.

Twenty-one-year-old Kyler Powell--a gay Mormon--had never organized or even attended a protest before spearheading the anti-Prop 8 march in Seattle. Due largely to Facebook and word of mouth, it drew nearly 10,000. The turnout was a testament not just to the fierce opposition to the second-class citizenship of gays and lesbians, but to the willingness of many outside the gay community to take action.

Unfortunately the event program itself--controlled by the Democratic Party-led Equal Rights Washington--silenced any militant response, refusing to address issues of homophobia because it might cause speakers, many of who were Democratic state and local officials, to think twice about appearing. And despite the large attendance, no grassroots organizing took place; instead, the crowd was told to wait on any action until the following March, for a lobbying day.

Less than one month later, the University of Washington's newspaper, the Daily, published a fiercely homophobic editorial in support of Prop 8, including a graphic of a man and a sheep. The author compared homosexuality to polygamy, incest and bestiality, and called it "a problem that needs to be dealt with."

In response, freshman Kyle Rapinian and friends organized a rally on the final day of classes, with hundreds of students gathering as a result of the Facebook group "Students for a Hate Free Daily." As with the previous demonstration, the outrage that drew these numbers was dampened by the prevailing ideas of today's LGBT movement. One school official, for example, defended the right to hate speech to mixed responses from the crowd.

Frustrated with the inability to express their outrage (words like "outrage" and hate were stricken from all official literature in favor of more "positive" message), radical activists began to organize outside the mainstream channels. Chanan Suarez Diaz, president of the Seattle Chapter of Iraq Veterans Against War, and Eli Steffen, an activist working in youth empowerment through the arts, put out a call for interested people to join the struggle against homophobia.

The first meeting brought together both new and more experienced activists who began to organize for a local demonstration as part of the National Call to Action to Repeal DOMA on January 10. In the weeks that followed, the group did explicit outreach to communities generally kept from the stage at local protests, including youth, transgender people, drag queens, and queers of color. By the time of the January 10 protest, the group included veterans, immigrants, straight people new to LGBT activism, and transgender people.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

ALL OF this has occurred against the backdrop of an alarming rise in hate crimes, in particular against LGBT people.

The Seattle Police Department has come under increased criticism for underreporting hate crimes against LGBT people, including four men who attacked two men, one in drag, calling them "faggots." The Seattle Times reported last summer that from July to November 2006, police had no record of hate crimes. But auditors uncovered six reports that had not been forwarded to the Bias Crimes Coordinator (a detective who investigates and logs such reports in a database) and think there are more to be found.

The FBI reports that the number of hate crimes in Washington state increased from 177 in 2006 to 195 in 2007, the last year for which statistics are available. Thirty-nine victims were targeted because of their real or perceived sexual orientation in 2007.

In the days leading up to the DOMA protest, the attacks on the LGBT community took a shocking turn when an anonymous letter was sent to 11 gay and lesbian bars and the alternative newspaper The Stranger in the city's Capitol Hill neighborhood threatening patrons. All received the identical warning: "I have in my possession approximately 67 grams of ricin with which I will indiscriminately target at least five of your clients."

According to the Centers for Disease Control, ricin poisoning can produce vomiting and diarrhea, hallucinations, seizures, and blood in the urine and can be fatal. The Seattle Police Department and the FBI are currently investigating.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

THE MARCH and rally on January 10 brought together nearly 100 people and organizations such as the United People's Coalition, the January 20 Inauguration Day Walkout and Rally Committee, the International Socialist Organization, and the Bend It Collective.

Suarez Diaz spoke of the absurdity of gay and lesbian soldiers fighting and dying to "bring democracy" to Iraq and Afghanistan while regarded treated as second-class citizens in their own country. Mike Andrews of Pride at Work argued for the importance of the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act in improving the lives of all working people, regardless of marital status. Icelandic singer and songwriter Thor got the crowd dancing, and queer spoken word artist Amber Flame gave a sensual performance of her piece "Church Kids."

Kelly Morgan, a young straight woman who was inspired by the November protests against Prop 8 to organize for LGBT rights, gave her first public speech arguing "Straight people need to know that it is okay to get involved, and to encourage your friends to get involved, in the gay rights movement...We need to stand with them in solidarity."

In the months to come, the dominant LGBT groups will need to be challenged on their conservatism. The initial response of organizers with Join The Impact was to keep the "message" of the January 10 protest "positive" and to refuse to publicly acknowledge the ricin threats against the community because "these types of people love attention."

This position could not be more at odds with the response of the targets of the threats themselves. The bar owners and their supporters organized a pub crawl, in which thousands of people, including city council members, visited the affected bars, to show solidarity in the attacks on the community's cultural institutions. The LGBT movement needs leadership that argues for the need to stand up to and fight back against attacks on the community and to not protect the rights of bigots.

If the marriage equality movement, and the struggle for LGBT rights in general, are to win, the LGBT community in Washington needs to honestly assess its strengths and weaknesses, its victories and failures. New strategies and tactics will have to be argued and debated. Most importantly, the LGBT community itself and their straight allies will need to become self-conscious organizers in a movement whose current bureaucratic leadership all too often substitutes itself for an entire civil rights movement.

With the state facing a budget deficit in the billions, schools facing closure and funding cuts, the threat of city funds being diverted from social services to build a new jail, and Boeing's lay off 4,500 workers, LGBT people may hear that their rights might have to be put on the back burner while the city and state deal with "more pressing" issues. To counter this, LGBT rights activists will need to develop stronger ties to labor and other civil rights activists and broaden the struggle to include more and more of the hopeful and energized thousands who've taken to the streets in recent months.

Another unholy mess created by a message from the Pope

The Pope ruined my Christmas.

By: Willem Buiter

What is it about the Judeo-Christian-Islamic religious tradition that leads so many of its most prominent spokespersons to make hateful, bigoted, life-diminishing and personal security-endangering statements when it comes to human sexuality? Perhaps there was something inherent in the environment and culture of the Fertile Crescent, and of the Middle East in general, that predisposed the religions it brought forth to declare anathema anything other than abstinence and heterosexual behaviour (the latter only in a setting of monogamy or polygyny, not polyandry, of course). Even so, one would have hoped that the civilising influence of Greek and Hellenistic culture would have filtered most of the sexual bigotry out of the European religious mainstream, and out of its offshoots in the former European colonies.

Apparently not. The current Pope, Benedict XVI is right at home in the abhorrent main-stream Christian tradition of sexual intolerance. In his address ‘Christmas greetings to the members of the Roman Curia and Prelature (December 22, 2008)’ (available thus far only in German and Italian from the Vatican website), the Pope makes a number of extremist, bigoted and intolerant statements about homosexuality and transsexuality.

People are responsible for those results of their words and actions that can reasonably be foreseen. Those uttering the statements or carrying out these acts may not have intended these consequences. They may even deplore them. If, however, these consequences could be foreseen even by a bear of very little brain, let alone by a pontiff with, by all accounts, a mass of grey matter between the ears, then the person using these words or engaging in these actions is responsible even for these unintended consequences. This statement by the Pope will lead to more harassment of homosexuals and transgendered persons and to more discrimination against them in a range of activities, including participation in religious worship. It will probably lead to more acts of violence against homosexuals and transsexuals.

In his address, Pope Benedict argues that saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour is as important as saving the rain forest from destruction. He also urged humanity to listen to the “language of creation” to understand the intended roles of man and woman. Finally, he argued that behaviour beyond traditional heterosexual relations between a man and woman (married - preferably to each other) was a “destruction of God’s work”.

How a man reputed to be as educated and intelligent as Benedict XVI can confuse the accumulated prejudice of centuries of dysfunctional organised religion with the message of the founder of Christianity is a mystery to me. Christ, as far as we know from the gospels, never said a word about homosexuality - let along about transgender sexuality. We don’t know whether He was single, married or divorced, monogamous or polygamous, straight, gay, or interested in transgender sexuality. We know nothing of Him between His early teens and His early thirties. When He starts His ministry He travels around with 12 male disciples and associates with a number of female camp followers. We know He liked wine - His first miracle was to change water into wine - but know nothing of His other interest, hobbies and vices.

Christ taught us to love God and to love our neighbour as ourself - the two Great Commandments from both the Old and the New Testaments. If my neighbour is gay, lesbian, transgendered or transsexual, God’s glory is revealed in his or her sexuality as much as it is in the sexuality of my heterosexual neighbour or in the voluntary abstinence of the Pope. If my neighbour is an adult and wishes to express his sexuality with another consenting adult, that sexual sharing is blessed by God regardless of whether is it homosexual, transgender or heterosexual, whenever it enhances the humanity of the other. Did God make a mistake when She allowed homosexuality to evolve in the human species, as it has in countless other animals? Or was She only joking?

Surely, whether something qualifies as right or wrong, moral or immoral, righteous or sinful depends on whether the act, the deed or the behaviour is both motivated by and expresses respect and love for all others affected by it? Homosexuality and homosexual behaviour, transgender sexualty and sexual behaviour and any form of sexuality and sexuality that does not hurt or diminish others but confirms and affirms them, cannot possibly contradict the teachings of Christ. His church, unfortunately, is another matter. When the teachings of an institutional expression of Christianity like the Roman Catholic Church are so radically at variance with the fundamental teachings of the founder of the religion, voluntary receivership and liquidation, with the proceeds distributed amongst the wretched of the earth, may be the best solution.

I consider the Pope’s views on sexuality, as expressed in his 22 December statement, to be a violation of everything Christ taught us and stood for. It is deeply un-Christian and must be rejected and fought wherever similar hateful prejudice and bigotry rear their ugly heads.

The Prop 8 Debate I: The Mormon Boycott entry ONE

It's been said that "Politics Makes Strange Bedfellows", but when you mix in Bigotry, Homophobia and Religious Fundamentalism, the resulting brew is anything but Saintly.

By: Aurora Grajeda
SFCA 100608

In simple terms:

The Mormon Church and affiliates are against same-sex marriages, they poured millions to pass Proposition H8 in California, the LGBT Community and Allies responded with nationwide protests and a call to Boycott the Mormon Church and their business interests, the Church and it's supporters are calling 'foul', claiming the LGBT Community is engaging in Hate-Speech and suppressing 'Freedom of Expression'

Their latest salvo is a full page advertisement in The New York Times, The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty published a full page advertisement that makes inaccurate and unsubstantiated claims about supposed "violence and intimidation" against religious groups by "mobs" since the passage of Proposition 8. You can see the ad here: http://www.nomobveto.org

GLAAD's Call To Action:

It is unacceptable to publish these kinds of dishonest claims. The New York Times needs to hear from you. Contact them TODAY and demand that they discontinue allowing inaccurate claims in their advertising: letters@nytimes.com.

For tips on writing letters to the editor, see GLAAD’s Media Essentials Training Manual:
http://www.glaad.org/media/media_essentials/07_mediaessentials_toolkit.php.

They are advocating for Religious Liberty? This truly tops the cake, please pray tell Becket Fund, in what way do we curtail your Religious Liberty? Interesting to note the way they list religions in their AD 'Jewish, Christian, Hindu, whatever', hmmmm... I wonder what the 'whatever stands for', let's see, how many mayor religions are there? last time I check, the consensus was that there were 4, Could it be that the fourth one stands for the "M" Religion and these, allegedly, defenders of Freedom of Religion couldn't even bring themselves to list it?
It'd be interested if they fee that the Muslim Faith also has a right to exist, HEY BECKET FUND AND ALLIES, CAN YOU ANSWER THAT QUESTION IN WRITING?

The Mormon Church came into another state with millions or dollars to impose their religious belief on other people by taking away their Constitutional rights, the question before us is: doesn't everybody has the right to spend their money as they choose? What's wrong in choosing how and where we spend our money? They interpret the Church's spending millions to take away rights as 'Freedom of Expression' and they label our boycott as 'Hate-Speech' and 'Violence'; talk about speaking from both sides of the mouth.

In their AD, they claim that 'some of the violence is being stoked by public statements denouncing the LDS for merely participating in the debate at all--as if that were somehow illegal', first of all, we are not saying that their meddling in other people's lives is illegal, (unless they are violating their 'Religious tax-exempt status'), second, they didn't just merely participated in the debate, they acted to perpetrate an act which clearly goes against the principles of equality accepted in this country and, third, what about the separation of Church and State? Didn't they participated to effectively impose their religious beliefs on others by amending a Constitution?

Check out what they have to say about the Demonstrations, far too many, however, seem never to have been demonstrations in the first place, but more nearly mobs, seeking not to persuade but to intimidate, another claim they have yet to substantiate is the claim that thugs send white powder to terrorize any place of worship, and this jewel of hypocrisy "Religious ware are wrong; they are also dangerous", really, isn't that what the Mormon Church and others are doing?.

There are 13 signatures listed in their AD, let's look at who some of them are, I'll start with Armando Valladares -- Depending on which side's claims you look at, he was either a Cuban Prisoner of Conscience imprisoned for 22 years and lauded by President Reagan who appointed Valladares to serve as the US ambassador to the "United Nations Human Rights Commission" and would later confer on him the nation’s highest civil honor, the "Presidential Citizens Medal" or, he was a former member of the secret police of Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista -- a cop from the Batista’s dictatorship, detained "that is the press of the time" for placing in public places bombs packed in cigarette boxes; a member of a terrorist cell in which Carlos Alberto Montaner also participated. They were convicted and for that reason Armando Valladares went to prison in Cuba

That was a little background info on him, but who is he today and what is he doing?

From WikiPedia:
"He is currently the President of the Valladares Project, an international non-profit organization which advocates children’s rights. Valladares is Chairman of the International Council of the New York-based Human Rights Foundation".

"The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) is a non-profit organization that works on "defending human rights and promoting liberal democracy in the Americas." The Human Rights Foundation was founded in 2005 by film producer Thor Halvorssen. Its offices are in New York City.

"According to a 2005 article by a conservative news website, the foundation ideologically emphasizes property rights and free markets as the basis for human freedom and criticizes traditional human rights groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch for undermining capitalism"
And this is Armando Valladares latest incarnation as "Defender of Human Rights" And making common cause with people and entities taking away rights from an entire community.

Now let's look at another signator to the Becket Group's AD: William A. Donohue: He has been the president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights in the United States since 1993.
William A. Donohue began his teaching career in the 1970s working at St. Lucy's School in Spanish Harlem. In 1977, he took a position as a college professor teaching at La Roche College in McCandless, Pennsylvania. In 1980 he received a doctorate in Sociology from New York University (NYU).[1]

His first book was "The Politics of the American Civil Liberties" Union and he became associated with the conservative Heritage Foundation where he is an adjunct scholar. His books on the ACLU made him one of the group's most prominent critics and firebrands.

While Donohue was in college in New York, Virgil C. Blum, a Jesuit at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, founded the Catholic League to counter Anti-Catholicism in American culture. Blum died in 1990; in 1993, Dr. Donohue became the director of the organization. Under his direction, the organization has become far more prominent and vocal.

Donohue publishes The Catalyst, the Catholic League journal. He serves on the board of directors of the National Association of Scholars. He serves on the board of advisers of the Washington Legal Foundation, the Howard Center for Family, Religion & Society, Society of Catholic Social Scientists, Catholics United for the Faith, Ave Maria Institute, the Christian Film & Television Commission and Catholic War Veterans. He has received several awards from the Catholic community and was voted one of the top 100 Catholics of the 20th century in a survey of Catholics conducted by the internet site, Daily Catholic. He received the 2005 St. Thomas More Award for Catholic Citizenship from Catholic Citizens of Illinois.

The Catholic League is registered as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. In 2006, according to its Form 990, its revenue was $16,590,333, and Donohue's salary and benefits amounted to $343,420
Weeeell, the second signator to the "Freedom of Religion AD" Is a "Defender Of Civil Liberties" lending his signature to the highly misleading Ad.

Next, let's look at Chuck Colson - currently, he is working with his non-profit organization devoted to prison ministry called Prison Fellowship, has a radio show and is a lecturer and author.
In 1968, Colson served as counsel to presidential candidate Nixon's Key Issues Committee.

On November 6, 1969, Colson was appointed as Special Counsel to President Nixon.

Colson was responsible for inviting influential private special interest groups into the White House policy-making process and winning their support on specific issues. His office served as the President's political communications liaison with organized labor, veterans, farmers, conservationists, industrial organizations, citizen groups, and almost any organized lobbying group whose objectives were compatible with the Administration's. Colson's staff broadened the White House lines of communication with organized constituencies by arranging Presidential meetings and sending White House news releases of interest to the groups.

In addition to his liaison and political duties, Colson's responsibilities included: performing special assignments for the President, such as drafting legal briefs on particular issues, reviewing Presidential appointments, and suggesting names for White House guest lists. His work also included major lobbying efforts on such issues as construction of an antiballistic missile system, the President's Vietnamization program, and the Administration's revenue-sharing proposal.

Colson was known as President Nixon's hatchet man. Slate magazine writer David Plotz described Colson as "Richard Nixon's hard man, the 'evil genius' of an evil administration." Colson has written that he was "valuable to the President ... because I was willing ... to be ruthless in getting things done". This is perhaps complimentary when read in comparison to the descriptions of Colson which pepper the work of Rolling Stone National Affairs' Political Correspondent, Hunter S. Thompson during the period. Colson authored the 1971 memo listing Nixon's major political opponents, later known as Nixon's Enemies List. A quip that "Colson would walk over his own grandmother if necessary" mutated into claims in news stories that Colson had boasted that he would run over his own grandmother to re-elect Nixon. Plotz reports that Colson sought to hire Teamsters thugs to beat up anti-war demonstrators. John Dean maintains that Colson proposed firebombing the Brookings Institution and stealing politically damaging documents while firefighters put the fire out.

Colson's voice, archives from April 1969, was heard in the 2004 movie Going Upriver deprecating the anti-war efforts of John Kerry. Colson's orders were to "Destroy the young demagogue before he becomes another Ralph Nader." In a phone conversation with President Nixon on April 28, 1971, Colson said, "This fellow Kerry that they had on last week...He turns out to be really quite a phony."

Watergate and Ellsberg scandals

Colson also became involved in the Committee to Re-elect the President (CRP or CREEP). At a CRP meeting on March 21, 1971, it was agreed to spend US$250,000 on "intelligence gathering" on the Democratic Party. Colson and John Ehrlichman appointed E. Howard Hunt to the White House Special Operations Unit (the so-called "Plumbers") which had been organized to stop leaks in the Nixon administration. Hunt headed up the Plumbers' burglary of Pentagon Papers-leaker Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office in September 1971. The Pentagon Papers were military documents about the Vietnam War which helped increase opposition to the war. Colson hoped that revelations about Ellsberg could be used to discredit the anti-Vietnam War left. Colson admitted to leaking information from Ellsberg's confidential FBI file to the press, but denied organizing Hunt's burglary of Ellsberg's office. He expressed regret for attempting to cover up this incident in his 2005 book, The Good Life
Another signator is: Chris Seiple Another Christian(?) (Following the Prince of Peace?) http://www.fpri.org/about/people/seiple.html
-- Chris Seiple is a Senior Fellow, Foreign Policy Research Institute and
President of the Institute for Global Engagement (IGE). Before coming to IGE, Seiple was an Earhart Fellow at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at Tufts University , where he received his Ph.D. in 2007.

Seiple serves on the board of Wycliffe Bible Translators, USA. He is a member at the Council on Foreign Relations (New York), the International Institute for Strategic Studies (London), and is Founder of IGE’s Council on Faith & International Affairs. He is the author of The U.S. Military/NGO Relationship in Humanitarian Interventions.

Chris Seiple "Stewarding American Power: Recommendations for the Next President"

Event on January 8, Under written by: The Richard & Helen DeVos Foundation
Chris Seiple, President of the Institute for Global Engagement in Washington DC which promotes sustainable environments for religious freedom worldwide. As a faith-based organization, IGE believes firmly in universal human dignity and is committed to the protection of all faiths through the rule of law. Dr. Seiple combines expertise with experience in fashioning some practical suggestions about how we, through the president we elect, might steward American might - spiritual, cultural, economic, and military - in a globalizing and hurting world."
Gee, a "Defender of Universal Human Dignity" also making common cause with people taking it away from a Community.

Next we will look up Dr. Alveda C. King, this signator is listed in the Becker Fund's Ad as "Civil Rights Activist", but it doesn't clarify if she is for protecting them or for taking them away, judging from her political views, the latter seems to be the correct answer. (From: Wikipedia)
Dr. Alveda C. King is an American politician, author, and activist. She is a niece of the civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr.. She is currently a Senior Fellow at the Alexis de Tocqueville Institution, a conservative "think-tank" in Washington, D.C. She is a former member of the Georgia House of Representatives and the founder of King for America.

Education

King has an M.A. in business management from Central Michigan University. She received her doctorate from Saint Anselm College.

Political views

King is a pro-life speaker and often speaks on college campuses about pro-life issues.

She endorsed Senator Sam Brownback for the 2008 Republican nomination.

Family

The mother of six, and a grandmother, she is the niece of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr..

One year after her famous uncle was assassinated, her father, A.D. King, died unexpectedly. Some believe he may have been murdered, though the details surrounding his death are not well known.
Another signature reads Marvin Olasky - Let's take a brief look at him, his travels and his deeds, or misdeeds depending on where one stands -- From: Wikipedia
Born in Boston, Massachusetts into a Russian-Jewish family, Olasky became an atheist at 14, shortly after his Bar Mitzvah. In college, he discovered Marxism and joined the Communist Party USA in 1972, after graduating from Yale University in 1971 with a B.A. degree in American Studies. In 1976, however, Olasky became a Christian after reading the New Testament in Russian, studying Puritan sermons, and reading Walker Percy, Whittaker Chambers, and C.S. Lewis. Also in 1976, Olasky graduated with a Ph.D. in American Culture from the University of Michigan.

Career and works

Olasky began working as a speech writer and public affairs coordinator for DuPont in 1978, and in 1983 began teaching journalism at the University of Texas, becoming a full professor in 1993. His initial writings gave him to opportunity to win funding from the Bradley Foundation in 1989, allowing Olasky to begin his most famous work, The Tragedy of American Compassion, which was first published in 1992. Largely ignored at first, this book in 1994 and 1995 gained the endorsement of William Bennett and Newt Gingrich, who gave a copy to every incoming Republican freshman representative in the 1994 Congress. Critics blasted the book for its criticism of government programs and said the book was short on research; supporters said it was well-researched and used it in the 1995-1996 welfare reform debate.

The Tragedy of American Compassion argues that private individuals and organizations, particularly the Christian church, have a responsibility to care for the poor, and contends that challenging, personal, and spiritual help, common until the 1930s, was more effective than the government welfare programs of recent decades. Olasky states that government programs are ineffective because they are disconnected from the poor, while private charity has the power to change lives because it allows for a personal connection between the giver and the recipient. He demonstrates his points by a chapter by chapter overview of poverty-fighting in America from colonial times to the 1990s. The book, with its sequels, became a key work defining "compassionate conservatism" (a term coined by Doug Wead)[citation needed] as it relates to welfare and social policy.

In 1995, Olasky became an occasional advisor to then Texas gubernatorial candidate George W. Bush, who put some of Olasky's policy suggestions into action during his term as governor by encouraging the use of religious charities to solve social problems. Christian ministries were called in by the state government to help in a variety of ways, most notably with the rehabilitation of drug and alcohol abusers and the counseling of prisoners. Their disputable success[citation needed] led Bush to make faith-based programs a major component of his 2000 presidential campaign, and in 2001, Olasky saw the national implementation of his ideas when President Bush created the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. During Bush's campaign, Olasky attained brief mass-media notoriety when he was understood by many to have claimed that the 2000 John McCain candidacy was equivalent to a pagan religion of Zeus. Olasky was actually playing off Tom Wolfe's novel A Man in Full, where a main character converts to the "religion of Zeus." Olasky was observing that McCain emphasized in campaigning the classical virtues, such as courage, while "compassionate conservative" Bush emphasized biblical virtues such as mercy -- and Olasky learned that wry comments during a heated campaign are verboten.[1]
Next in line for scrutiny is one with a 'funny' (he, he, he) last name and with a gargantuan dose of hypocrisy to go along, Douglas Laycock

"I come to these cases with a fairly simple theory, which is that people of every religion, including the majority and the minority, and people of no religion at all, are entitled to believe their own beliefs, speak their own beliefs, and act on their own beliefs as long as they're not hurting anybody else, and to be left alone by government and have government not take sides. And a corollary of that is that none of these groups can use the government to try to force the other side to join in or participate in their own religious observances."

Another signator is: Nathan J. Diament, The public policy director for the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations, let's take a quick look at him and on who are some of the players attacking the LGBT Rights, from the Boston.Com: Episcopal diocese sets same-sex wedding ban

By Michael Paulson, Globe Staff | May 13, 2004

Although rabbis have almost total authority within Jewish congregations, for Orthodox Jews "there is no conceivable basis under Orthodoxy's understanding of halakha [Jewish law] which would sanction a same-sex marriage," according to Nathan J. Diament, public policy director for the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations. Similarly, in Conservative Judaism "The Rabbinical Assemblies' Law Committee has deemed it inappropriate for a Conservative rabbi to perform such marriage," said Aaron Kischel, executive director of the New England region of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.

And "Last but not Least" of this strange brew of signators to The New York Times dishonest Becket Fund's AD, a more strange Evangelist, Richard Cizik, by his being an Evangelist, speaks volumes about him, but there are aspects which makes you take a second look at him, as in this interview in Salon.Com Lost faith in the GOP Evangelical leader Richard Cizik explains how Iraq, corruption and other failures are transforming the political piety of America's religious voters.

But my being a gullible, trusting-kind-of-person without the scintilla of skepticism, I'd like to ask him about other precepts in the Bible/Leviticus, does he follows all of them? Or, as many Evangelical Christians do, Picks and Chooses in a sort of as in a Evangelical Biblical Cafeteria?

I will give him some points on this piece, written on Earth's Day 2007.

Richard Cizik
Earth Day: A Biblical Mandate

I will celebrate "Earth Day" and encourage Christians of all denominations and traditions to do so. Why? We believe that God created the earth, entrusting its care to man, and that He will one day recreate it in "the new heaven and new earth." We are called to "witness" to our faith as believers.

Participation in this event is an opportunity to express love for God and care for what He has created. We evangelicals call this "creation care." Care for the entire creation -- the environment and "all creatures great and small" -- is a biblical obligation (Gen. 2:15). We should walk in God's ways (Deut. 10:12) and try to inspire people by offering broader vistas of thought and service.

Can we hear the voice of the biblical prophet Ezekiel: "Is it not enough for you to drink the water? Must you also muddy the rest with your feet?" Here's a modern-day question: Is it enough for you to enjoy a pleasant climate? Must you destroy it? Is it not enough for you to enjoy the myriad of creatures? Must you extinguish them? Major segments of the earth are dying and we are responsible. Earth's resources are not infinite.

A new moral awakening is sweeping our land. It's a re-awakening to the heart of the Gospel ethic: to steward the natural world in order to preserve for ourselves and future generations a beautiful, rich, and healthy environment. It is "revision-ing" our lives. Taking part in "Earth Day" is a response to this new calling.

Thus, our family will worship together at National Cathedral in Washington with other environmental, scientific, and faith leaders and then enjoy the outdoors together. It's all part of a faith commitment we've made to do everything in our power to preserve this precious gift the Creator has given us.

Richard Cizik is vice president for governmental affairs of the National Association of Evangelicals. His primary responsibilities include editing publications such as NAE Washington Insight, directing NAE's Washington Insight Briefing and Christian Student Leadership Conferences, setting its policy direction on issues before Congress, the White House, and Supreme Court, and serving as a national spokesman on issues of concern to evangelicals.

Border Crossers - Anti- Immigrant Transgender Asylum Seekers piece in SF Weekly

Hi sisters and brothers, good afternoon.

About two hours ago, Alejandra Byerly, the Health Educator/Program Coordinator of EL-LA Programa para Trans-Latinas, alerted me to an article by Lauren Smiley, published today at the SF Weekly Titled Border Crossers - Long rap sheet? No problem. Transgender Latina hookers in S.F. are successfully fighting deportation by asking for asylum.

Also published online on November 25, 2008 at 2:57pm

I read it and feel that this is an article with an anti-immigrant tone bent, she cites some of the people who help Transgender and paints them as enablers in law-breaking activities, including Noemi Calonge and Dusty Araujo - But I also find it disturbing that she cites and gives credibility to Dan Stein, who is president of the Washington- based "Federation for American Immigration Reform" (FAIR), a virulent anti-immigrant outfit, the Southern Poverty Law Center issued an Intelligence Report in the Winter of 2007 on FAIR titled "The Teflon Nativists" With the Sub-Title 'FAIR Marked by Ties to White Supremacy' By Heidi Beirich.

This is the Editor's Note on the Report: After issuing this report in December 2007, the Southern Poverty Law Center added the Federation for American Immigration Reform to its list of hate groups.
I need to go over the article again with a more analytical scrutiny to see if my first impression of it was correct, that it is very light in journalistic research and heavy in inflammatory rhetoric on how the Immigration Asylum Laws for Transgenders if being abused by Transgender Prostitutes and Hookers (Her choice of words), I include here a listing of her articles in the SF Weekly for anyone who would want to peruse through them.

I find it callously harsh, that a woman has written this piece against a group that traditionally has been plagued with discrimination, abuse and violence, specially the day after we observed the United Nation's International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, because no matter what opinion anyone would have whether or not we, Transgender Women, are Women, the fact of the matter is that we are treated as such, specially by the legion of Transphobes found in our society.

Yes indeed, just as Biological Women, we are treated as 'less than' the males in our society and just as Biological Women, we are highly likely to be raped and abused, at risk of it starting in early childhood.

Please feel free to offer comments or critical analysis of Lauren Smiley's article, in addition, suggestions on how to deal with or what to do with slanted articles as the one Ms. Smiley wrote, will be of great help.
