Mass. reverses tough gender rule for driver's licenses
Posted: 2/1/2009, 1:26 PM
The Registry of Motor Vehicles has quietly reversed a policy from former Republican Gov. Mitt Romney that advocates said made it nearly impossible for transgender people to change their gender designation on driver’s licenses and state identification cards. “We are pleased that the RMV enacted a policy that’s consistent with medical guidelines and policies in other states,” said Marc Solomon, executive director of MassEquality, an advocacy group for equal marriage rights. In a Jan. 21 letter to Solomon, Registrar Rachel Kaprielian wrote that transgender people no longer need to present medical proof of sex reassignment surgery or amended birth certificates in order to change the gender designation on driver’s licenses and state identification cards. Under the new policy, a gender marker can be changed by the applicant submitting an updated application and a gender designation change form.

Small Colo. town is unlikely sex change capital of U.S.
CBS News, Posted: 9/9/2008, 3:04 PM
Trinidad looks pretty much like any small town. Home to about 10,000 people, it's tucked in the Rocky Mountains of southern Colorado. Mayor Joe Reorda says it's a "live and let live" kind of place. As a local doctor it's Marci Bowers' job to care, but she's not your typical small-town doc. So what's so special about Doctor Bowers? Before she was Doctor Marci Bowers she was Doctor Mark Bowers. In 1998, Dr. Bowers underwent sexual reassignment surgery - a "sex change" operation. And now today she performs that very same surgery on hundreds of patients every year, right here in Trinidad. In 2003, she took over from Dr. Stanley Biber who started the nation's first private practice for gender reassignment surgery back in 1969. And so Trinidad, Colorado came to be known as the "sex-change capital of the United States."

Gay Thai activists lobby against castrating minors
Agence France Presse (AFP), Posted: 3/27/2008, 1:32 PM
Gay activists in Thailand are joining with worried parents to urge doctors to stop castrating minors who want to take the first step toward a sex change. Leading gay activist Nathee Teerarojanapong said he and a group of parents will submit a letter to Thailand's Medical Council urging stricter controls on private clinics that castrate teenagers. Underage boys who hope eventually to have sex change operations are increasingly seeking castrations as a first step toward becoming women, he said. The boys believe that in doing so their bodies will not develop masculine features so their appearance will be more feminine when they save enough money for the complete gender reassignment surgery.

A judge yesterday granted a hearing to a convicted murderer who says she's being denied medical treatment in prison as she awaits a ruling in her bid for sex change surgery. U.S. District Judge Mark Wolf ordered a March 13 hearing in the case of Michelle Kosilek, formerly known as Robert. Kosilek asked for the hearing after claiming she'd been denied hair removal treatment and access to a specialist to discuss testosterone levels. She said as a result her body is becoming more masculine. Kosilek sued the Department of Correction in 2000, saying its refusal to allow her to have sex-change surgery violated the Eighth Amendment protection against cruel and unusual punishment. After Wolf ruled in 2002 that Kosilek was entitled to treatment for gender identity disorder – but didn't order sex-reassignment surgery. Kosilek sued in 2005, saying the treatments weren't enough.

Iranian gay men having sex change to escape trouble
BBC, Posted: 2/27/2008, 3:16 PM
Homosexual relationships are banned in Iran, but the country allows sex change operations and hundreds of men have elected for surgery to change their lives. "He wants to kill me. He keeps telling me to come home so he can kill me. He had put rat poison in my tea." For Ali Askar, at age 24, the decision to become a woman came at a heavy cost. His father threatened to kill him if he went ahead with surgery. Now renamed Negar, she says she would not have had the operation if she did not live in Iran. "If I didn't have to operate, I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't touch God's work." But as Ali, he felt he had no identity.

Trans woman's scam paid for sex change, say police
My Fox Atlanta, Posted: 12/11/2007, 4:21 PM
Police said yesterday that they arrested a woman wanted in four states for a check-writing scam. Investigators had to sort out some confusion about the woman's true identity because the woman by the name of Hassani Norword, used to be a man named Stefon Thomas. "Some of the people we interviewed said it was more like a male than a female," said Captain Mark Westbrook of the Rockmart Police Department. Investigators said some detectives thought the woman might actually be a man dressed up as a woman. They said Norwood is a transgender person who has undergone a sex change operation and that she was previously incarcerated in state prison under the name Stefon Joe Thomas. Police said her crimes helped pay for her transformation.

Ireland in breach of human rights in sex change case
Irish Times, Posted: 10/26/2007, 2:14 PM
The High Court has ruled that the Ireland is in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights over its failure to recognize a sex change that a transgendered person underwent more than a decade ago. Dr Lydia Foy, Athy, Co Kildare, was born male but had gender realignment surgery 15 years ago. She took the action to secure a birth certificate describing her as female. She abandoned an earlier claim for her original birth certificate to be altered and instead wants a new birth certificate reflecting her female gender. In the ruling, Justice Liam McKechnie said he could not force this change, but that Irish law was incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights.

Wachowski Brothers no more as one has sex change
Cinematical, Posted: 9/6/2007, 7:22 AM
Famed film duo the Wachowski Brothers are no more. That's because the man formerly known as Larry Wachowski has officially completed his full sex change. It's unclear whether Larry, now Lana, had an actual operation, or just underwent hormone treatments Say goodbye to referring to the writer-director duo as the Wachowski Brothers; they'll now be The Wachowskis. Lana will speak to the press about this -- which is rare for the Wachowskis since they're not ones to speak to the press about anything, let alone something this personal in nature. However, rumor has it that she will not openly speak about the sex change until after "Speed Racer" hits theaters next May.

A year-long trial in Boston federal court with hundreds of hours of testimony to decide whether a murderer serving life in prison get a sex-change operation at taxpayer expense. The case of Michelle -- formerly Robert -- Kosilek is being closely watched across the country by advocates for other inmates who want to undergo a sex change. Transgender inmates in other states have sued prison officials, and not one has succeeded in persuading a judge to order a sex-change operation. The Massachusetts Correction Department is vigorously fighting Kosilek's request for surgery, saying it would create a security nightmare and make Kosilek a target for sexual assault.

A report published in 2004 by the Equality Authority found the Irish government's Health Service Executive tended to focus on providing funding for people to travel abroad for sex change operations rather than providing services on the ground. Since 2000, the HSE has handed out 70,000 Euros to fund genital reassignment surgery abroad for seven people.
